Kristen Wiig and Gloria Estefan have joined the cast of live-action/animated adventure comedy Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie. DreamWorks Animation President Margie Cohn unveiled the news during Universal’s CinemaCon presentation this afternoon, saying, “Our girl is primed and ready for her feature theatrical debut.” Uni has a September 26 theatrical release date set domestically.
Estefan will play Grandma Gigi in the hybrid family adventure with Wiig in a “new spin on the crazy cat lady,” Cohn said.
The movie is a big-screen version of Netflix’s popular kids series, whose 11th season debuted on the streamer in February. Directed by Ryan Crego, the film sees Gabby (Laila Lockhart Kraner, reprising her role from the series) head out on a road trip with her Grandma Gigi to the urban wonderland of Cat Francisco. But when Gabby’s dollhouse, her most prized possession, ends up in the hands of an eccentric cat lady named Vera, Gabby sets off on an adventure through the real world to get the Gabby Cats back together and save the dollhouse before it’s too late.
Also featuring are Darren Criss, Logan Bailey, Eduardo Franco, Juliet Donenfeld, Donovan Patton, Sainty Nelsen, Maggie Lowe, Carla Tassara, Tara Strong, Secunda Wood, Maria Bamford and Mimi Webb.
Gabby’s Dollhouse is a top preschool brand in the U.S. across publishing, home, apparel and more, with a YouTube channel visited by millions weekly. Expansion continues through Universal Destinations & Experiences theme parks, global fan experiences, live events and more.
