Apple Originals Films may be looking at its first successful blockbuster in F1 coming out via Warner Bros on June 27.
We’ve been hearing the movie has been testing well, and even if there’s a bit of hurdle in U.S. audiences not being fans of the sport, the bet is that F1 rallies overseas. From today’s extended look, director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have delivered something that’s akin to a Top Gun with lots of riveting, cut the corner race scenes which outstrip that of James Mangold’s Ford vs. Ferrari (no disrespect) and bromance camaraderie.
Pitt’s Sonny Hayes is a Daytona winner, and walks away with a $5,000 check. However, in the wake of the excitement of the race, he’s washing his clothes at the laundromat. A porche pulls up and Javier Bardem’s suede coat wearing Ruben. He approaches Sonny and there’s a banter. “You remind me of a old friend,” says Pitt. They go back and forth. Ruben removes his glasses; indeed it’s Sonny’s amigo. But Ruben is in a pickle: in the hole $350 million. He needs a driver, and yes, that’s Sonny.
Warner Bros is about to give the spring break box office a lift this weekend with Legendary’s Minecraft which is expected to clock $130M worldwide. F1 is one of their several event films this summer along with Final Destination Bloodlines (May 16), Superman (July 8) and Zach Cregger’s crazy horror movie Weapons (Aug. 8).
