Prada is set to redefine luxury dining in China with the launch of its first standalone restaurant in Asia, a collaboration with renowned Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai. The restaurant, named Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai, will be housed in the historic Rong Zhai mansion in Shanghai, a meticulously restored 1918 residence that Prada has used as a cultural hub since 2017.

Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai takes its name from the Chinese phrase “mi shang,” meaning “to be obsessed with,” reflecting the immersive and evocative atmosphere the space aims to create. Wong Kar-wai’s influence is central to the restaurant’s design, drawing from the visual aesthetics of his iconic films In the Mood for Love and Happy Together. The space incorporates mirrored surfaces and contrasting elements, evoking the director’s signature dreamlike and sensual style. The inspiration behind the concept also stems from the philatelic motif of tête-bêche, a design featuring two adjoining postage stamps in reversed orientations, symbolizing a cultural bridge between Milan and Shanghai.

Steeped in Wong Kar-wai’s cinematic vision, every element of Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai is meticulously curated to exude refined elegance. The interplay of reflections and contrasts within the interiors enhances the intimate yet dynamic atmosphere, where Chinese and Italian aesthetics seamlessly intertwine. Prada’s sophisticated identity is framed within the historical charm of Rong Zhai, ensuring a dining experience that is both timeless and contemporary.

The restaurant will offer an all-day dining experience, blending Italian cuisine with Chinese influences. The carefully curated menu will cover breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and evening cocktails, providing guests with a refined yet diverse selection of dishes. This fusion of culinary traditions transforms each meal into an artistic expression of cultural dialogue, aligning with Prada’s heritage of craftsmanship and innovation.

Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai is set to open its doors to the public on March 31, with reservations available via a WeChat mini-program.
