Eric McCormack got to relive an awkward school dance story on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Monday — that had host Kelly Clarkson hiding behind her hair out of embarrassment.
Clarkson reminded the Will & Grace star that he helped organize a high school dance, asking why he would do such a thing because it “sounds like so much pressure.”
McCormack explained, “End of seventh grade, I was elected class president. Not because I was remotely popular, but because I gave a funny speech.”
Once eighth grade arrived, McCormack was tasked with organizing the first dance of the school year, which he said “was close to Halloween.”
“So I said everyone had to come as their favorite rockstar, which I thought was awesome. No one did,” he recalled. “One guy wore KISS makeup, but just his regular jeans and t-shirt.”
“Oh my God, were you the guy that showed up dressed up and no one was?” Clarkson asked, grabbing her hair to hide her face behind it. “This is a nightmare.”
McCormack shared that he “came as the Captain from Captain & Tennille,” renting a turtleneck and “sweating because [he was] nervous.”
“No one danced with me, of course,” he said, eliciting “awws” from Clarkson and the audience.
However, McCormack was redeemed at “the very end of the night,” when Tracy, the most popular girl at school, approached him for a dance.
“She said, ‘C’mon prez,’ and she took me to the dance floor,” he remembered. “And Alice Cooper‘s ‘I Never Cry’ came on, and I just sweat all over her.”
Clarkson and McCormack agreed that was “kind” of Tracy, though Clarkson still stuck up for the Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue actor.
“But also it would’ve been more kind, Tracy, if you would’ve dressed up,” she quipped. “Tracy’s probably real nice.”
