Two-time President Donald Trump didn’t rule out trying to seek another term in an exclusive interview with NBC News on Sunday. Pursuing a third term is unconstitutional and prohibited by the 22nd Amendment, as “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
“A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump said in a morning phone call with NBC. “But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration,” he continued, adding that he is “focused on the current.”
While the president has spoken about running again before, some Republicans have dismissed the comments as jokes.
When asked if he would seek another term, Trump replied, “I like working.” When NBC requested clarification, the president said, “I’m not joking” and it is “far too early to think about it.”
Amending the Constitution to abolish the two-term limit is incredibly difficult and would require either a two-thirds vote of Congress or two-thirds of the states agreeing to call a constitutional convention to propose changes. And even if that happened, three-quarters of the states would still need to ratify the changes.

Trump said in the call that “there are methods which you could do it”—a response to NBC asking if he has been presented with any plans for seeking a third term.
NBC brought up a situation in which Vice President JD Vance runs, wins, and then hands over the role to Trump. “That’s one,” the president replied. “But there are others too,” he added, before declining to name any.
As NBC noted, Trump ally Steve Bannon has also been planting the seeds of a third Trump presidency. In an interview on News Nation, he said that he believes Trump will “run and win again in 2028,” adding that “we’ll have a couple of alternatives” for avoiding the Constitution and its two-term limit.
