Laurie (Carrie Coon) had quite the night on The White Lotus Season 3 Episode 7 “Killer Instincts.” After spending last week’s episode of the HBO hit antagonizing bestie Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) for sleeping with Valentin (Arnas Fedaravicius) and lying about it, Laurie got to have some fun of her own. Well, sort of.
**Spoilers for The White Lotus Season 3 Episode 7 “Killer Instincts,” now streaming on MAX**
After tensions between Laurie, Jackie, and Kate (Leslie Bibb) come to a head at dinner — with Jackie and Kate spitefully telling Laurie that she’s essentially her own worst problem — the New Yorker blows the White Lotus resort off, opting to meet Valentin and his friends at a Muay Thai fight. Several rounds later, Laurie winds up in bed with Aleksei (Julian Kostov). The joy of their exuberant love-making soon crumbles, though, when Aleksei reveals himself to be a shady conman, cheat, and thief.
Yup, Carrie Coon got to have a hot sex scene on The White Lotus! More importantly, the fallout of that sex scene is likely going to affect Laurie, her relationship with her friends, and the future of the Vladivostok boys in Thailand.
We’ve known literally since the first episode of The White Lotus Season 3 that resort owner Sritala Hollinger (Lek Patravadi) chose Valentin to be the ladies’ butler because he’s good-looking. The implication has been that he dabbles in affairs with the clients for fun. While the married Jackie initially plotted to pair Laurie with Valentin, she sleeps with him herself at the end of The White Lotus Season 3 Episode 5. Kate discovers the hookup and blabs about it to Laurie in Episode 6. Laurie, hurt by Jackie’s actions, turns on her friend, stirring the pot with snipes and jabs about past behavior.
It all comes to a head when the three women have dinner. While Laurie is still on the offensive, going so far as to allege that Jackie tried to hook up with Kate’s husband, Jackie fires back. She rubs Laurie’s face in her own choices, noting that Laurie had every opportunity to sleep with Valentin, but didn’t. Jackie goes so far as to tell Laurie if she’s so unhappy with her life, she has the power to change it. Kate piles on, noting that Laurie’s source of disappointment is always changing, but she’s always disappointed.
Laurie understandably doesn’t react well to this. She goes to the Muay Thai fight alone, where she meets Valentin, Aleksei, and Vlad (Yuri Kolokolnikov). Eventually, she decides to sleep with Aleksei, who has been flirting with her since the Full-Moon Party, despite the fact that he has a girlfriend.
While Laurie seems to be enjoying herself in bed with Aleksei, what happens after shatters it all. Aleksei tries to hustle Laurie for $10,000 to supposedly help his mother move to Thailand. He doesn’t seem to grasp that Laurie is not actually White Lotus-level wealthy. She’s just there as a guest of TV star Jackie.
Laurie is eventually saved (?) from this awkward situation by an even more awkward one. Aleksei’s girlfriend arrives, prompting Laurie to hide in a second room, where she sees all of the jewelry that Aleksei and his friends have stolen. Her night ends with her leaving the flat via window and walking solemnly alone back to the resort.
Laurie’s experience is interesting because she did take action to improve her circumstance. She chose to pursue pleasure. But one of the primary themes of this season of The White Lotus is that people run towards pleasure, but they can’t outrun pain. The pain still wallops her. Aleksei was seducing her as part of a con. Her friends might be right about her.
With both Laurie and Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) now aware that Valentin and his friends robbed the resort store, it will be interesting to see which character brings that information to light first. Our money is on Gaitok, but a spurned Laurie is a dangerous beast. (Just ask Jaclyn.)
