The Toronto Blue Jays have quite a decision to make with expiring stars Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette.
Toronto can hold onto the two stars, attempt to win this year and re-sign them in free agency next winter. Or the Blue Jays can trade the star infielders to bring in massive prospect returns while building for the future. Their decision will likely be made by where they sit in the standings around the trade deadline.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter recently predicted the Blue Jays would trade Bichette and Guerrero this season, but he took it a step further. Reuter predicted the Blue Jays would trade both stars in one blockbuster deal.
“After failing to come to terms on a long-term deal with Guerrero during the offseason, the Blue Jays are at a crossroads,” Reuter wrote. “If they fall out of contention early, the free-agent-to-be will almost certainly hit the trade block this summer along with several other veterans. We’ve seen a huge packaged deal of Max Scherzer and Trea Turner moved in the past, and a deal that includes Vlad Jr. and Bichette could really shift the baseball landscape at the deadline.”
For the team to trade both players in one deal, they would need to find a suitor willing to mortgage their farm system to land two superstar infielders. This is going to be quite a task, but it could be done.
The prospect return for these two would be massive. Guerrero, by himself, would likely net a huge return led by a few top-100 prospects. It would likely take a mix of big league stars and top prospects for this deal to come to fruition.
In all likelihood, the Blue Jays could trade one or both of these infielders this season, but it’s not the most likely outcome that both players land with the same team.
