The Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves are looking to make pushes to win their respective divisions this season.
Contenders are always looking for additional starting pitching at the trade deadline, and this July could provide some strong options on the table — including Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez.
Both the Cubs and the Braves could be suitors for Valdez in July if the Astros struggle in the early half of the season.
Valdez is set to become a free agent in 2026, and the Astros have not made much of an attempt to extend the 31-year-old left hander.
As a result, neither the Cubs nor the Braves would have to give up a huge haul to acquire him. It would allow either team an opportunity to get the first chance to lock him before he hits the open market.
Currently, Valdez is projected to sign a three-year, $70 million contract — an average of $23.3 million per year.
The Astros seem content with knowing Valdez is set to leave one way or another. When he officially departs depends on results from this season.
If the Astros have a clear path to the playoffs, through the division or a wildcard spot, expect Valdez to stay in Houston until the end of the season. However, falling out of contention could see him finish this year on a contender.
Currently, either team could expect to cough up two top-15 prospects for Valdez. As the deadline approaches, however, his price could quickly shoot up. Both teams should be willing to pay the price for an elite starter who would easily slide in to the top of their rotations.
