Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Yesterday, during a massive Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced and released a new app called Nintendo Today, which was set to be the go-to destination for daily Nintendo news. That seems to already be paying dividends, as the first major piece of news to come via the app has now arrived.
In the Nintendo Today app, the company announced that the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda film will be released on March 26, 2027. While details of the film’s release are light – and the post on Nintendo Today certainly did not elaborate much – it does say that the March 26, 2027 release date will be worldwide, suggesting all regions will get the film at roughly the same time.
Nintendo first announced the development of a live-action The Legend of Zelda film back in November 2023 with a post on the official Nintendo corporate website. At the time, it was announced that the film would be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment, with the latter handling worldwide distribution.
The film is being produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, the latter having been the producer on a number of films including most Spider-Man films, the Uncharted film, 2017’s Ghost in the Shell film, and more, along with a host of television projects. The film is being directed by We Ball, best known for his work on the Maze Runner film trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the fourth film in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise.
Not much is known about the film’s cast or plot, but Nintendo has said it will be “deeply involved” in the film’s production in order to “put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment.”
It comes after two other smash hit films based on Nintendo-owned properties, the live-action Detective Pikachu film back in 2019 and the animated film The Super Mario Bros. Movie – starring Chris Pratt and Jack Black – in 2023. Both films were reasonably well-received critically, and became some of the highest-grossing video game films of all time.
