Jimmy Kimmel is far from done discussing the disastrous Signal chat leak that revealed Trump administration war plans to an Atlantic journalist (and, as a result, the rest of the world). As Kimmel himself pointed out on last night’s show, plenty of conservatives are trying to brush the story under the rug, but to him, “this is like Harry Potter — there are many books and stories.”
While discussing on last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live monologue the fallout of the chat and how President Donald Trump has reacted to it, Kimmel promised, “We’re going to go through every bit. Hogwarts and all, we’re going through all of it,” much to the delight of his audience.
Kimmel then explained to his audience that National Security Adviser Michael Waltz — who included The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg in the Signal chat — had his Venmo account set to public as of yesterday, meaning his name, photo and full contacts list is available for anyone to see. The list includes reporters from major outlets like CNN, NBC, MSNBC, as well as current and former Trump White House employees, per Kimmel.
“Even Matt Gaetz was like, how could you be so careless?” Kimmel quipped, taking aim at one of his favorite old targets. He then mocked Waltz for his Venmo usage, asking the audience, “Security issues aside, isn’t it a little disturbing that a guy overseeing our national defense, our weapons, our nuclear weapons, is still in the ‘Dude, you owe me $14 for tacos’ phase of his life?”
After taking shots at Waltz, Kimmel moved onto Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who was also in the Signal chat and detailed the U.S. plans to attack Yemen. Kimmel said Hegseth’s detailed messages in the chat “led some to speculate that maybe he was drinking on the job.”
He then shared a clip from Fox in which Hegseth’s former colleagues there (he served as a weekend host for the outlet before joining the Trump administration) denied the accusations he was drinking while working.
After the clip concluded, Kimmel said he believed the hosts and agreed that Hegseth was likely “perfectly sober” when he sent the texts and made an “idiotic mistake” in the Signal chat.
“Pete Hegseth and Mike Waltz have said and done so many stupid things this week, Trump might have to start calling them Eric and Don Jr.,” he joked, before recapping the president’s own response to the Signal chat.
After playing a clip of Trump blaming the Signal app for being “defective,” Kimmel cracked, “Blaming Signal for this is like blaming Tinder when you get caught cheating on your wife.”
Jimmy Kimmel Live airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on ABC.
