Jessie Ennis has had the pleasure of playing Jo on Mythic Quest for four seasons across half a decade. In that time, her character has seen hirings, firings, demotions and promotions, and more shenanigans than one can even count. But one thing she did not see coming? That Season 4 finale shocker.
Sitting down with Decider to dissect the most recent episode of the Apple TV+ comedy, the actress — whose performance cannot be described as anything less than a standout each week — shared her take on the twists and turns of Season 4, Episode 10, “Heaven and Hell.”
**Spoilers ahead for the Season 4 finale of Mythic Quest**
In the episode, Jo goes toe-to-toe with Jean-Georges (Andy Lebuhn), the assistant to Montreal execs Jacques and Jean Luc, as the MQ team shows off the Elysium expansion. Ennis — who gets to show off her very real French skills during her character’s tête-à-tête with Jean-Georges — ultimately ends the episode by receiving devastating news: she has been promoted to head of Playpen. It’s especially heartbreaking for the character, whose Season 4 arc revealed her true desire in life is to assist powerful people.
According to the actress, co-creator Megan Ganz told her at the beginning of the season that Jo’s Season 4 journey would be all about self-discovery and would most likely end in a major power dynamic shift for the MQ team. Ennis said that getting to play “horribly depressed” about a promotion was “so exciting” as it also opened the door for an even more hilarious storyline for Jo in Season 5.
“As a fan of Mythic Quest, I’m dying to see another season to see where this takes us,” Ennis told Decider of her reaction to all of the big moments from the Season 4 finale. “I’m really, really hopeful that we come back for a fifth season so we can see Jo in this conflict of desire and how she would rise to the task of being a boss.”
It’s certainly not the only reason that Ennis is hoping and praying that Apple TV+ greenlights Season 5, however. “Heaven and Hell” also ended with a kiss between Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) and Ian (Rob McElhenney) that left fans, including Ennis, in a state of shock.
The actress told Decider that she watched the finale pre-release alongside several of her family members and was similarly surprised by the last 90 or so seconds of the episode. In that final moment, Poppy — who had been on a flight halfway around the world to live with her baby daddy, Storm (Chase Yi) — and Ian embrace and decide to continue working together as they truly are an undeniable pair. Just before separating, however, Ian pulls Poppy in for a kiss four seasons in the making, only to be followed by a moment of confusion for the characters.
“When that happened, I feel like I lost some of my hearing in one of my ears because we all screamed so loudly,” Ennis joked. “But I was truly shocked. I mean, I had read the script, and it wasn’t in the script. And then I heard that they were shooting an alternate ending, and this is obviously the alternate ending that they were talking about.”
In a sitdown for the finale, Nicdao also explained that this moment was never intended for those characters, who have been otherwise disgusted in the past at the thought of a hookup between Ian and Poppy. It was Nicdao’s real-life pregnancy, though, that prompted Ganz and the other writers to have Poppy and Ian’s relationship adapt organically to Poppy’s pregnancy. In fact, Nicdao told Decider that while she and McElhenney were originally apprehensive to the idea, it ended up being the only way they could see the season ending.
“It was definitely something that we never — I certainly never thought was going to happen. I know Rob also never thought it was going to happen in the show,” Nicdao shared. “I guess something else happened this season that we never thought would happen in the show, which is that I was pregnant. And so, when our amazing writers decided to use that in the show, it kind of built this new dynamic with Poppy and Ian.”
Ennis agreed and declined to throw her full support yet behind Pian (hopefully the fans can come up with a better portmanteau), but said that it’s her hope that the wild moment yields an even crazier storyline in Season 5, potentially one where Ian steps in to help Poppy raise her baby. Either way, she told Decider she is there and ready to cheer on the writers who have given the fans four incredible seasons of television thus far.
“I am team ‘make a good TV show.’ So any time we take a wild swing, I am so excited to see where Rob and Megan and the rest of the writers will take it from there,” Ennis said. “And I think they’ve done a great job every season with kind of blowing it up in the finale and leaving us at a place where we’re dying to come back to and see how they keep the story on its toes.”
Fingers crossed that the world gets to see what happens next for these characters.
The entire fourth season of Mythic Quest is currently streaming on AppleTV+.
