The New York Mets had quite an exciting offseason. They began the winter by inking Juan Soto to a monumental contract worth nearly $800 million. After a lot of negotiations, the Mets also inked Pete Alonso to a new contract.

While the offseason was very exciting, it’s almost time to begin the season, and the Mets seem more than ready for the year.

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden recently put together a list of predictions for the upcoming MLB season. On this list of predictions, Bowden predicted Alonso would opt out of his deal with the Mets at the end of the season, but there’s a catch.

“Pete Alonso opts out of his contract with the Mets after the season but quickly re-signs on a three-year, $100 million deal with a mutual option for a fourth year,” Bowden wrote.

It’s hard to imagine Alonso opting out of his deal unless he expects to land a contract much larger than the $100 million deal suggested by Bowden.

The slugger had quite a stressful free agency in which he signed a deal for a lot less money than he was reportedly asking for. It’s hard to imagine Alonso would be willing to take another big risk by opting out of his contract and entering free agency again.

But if the slugger puts together another big season this year, this could change. Alonso would need to slug upward of 40 home runs again to increase his value in free agency. If he puts together a mediocre year, it’s almost a guarantee he opts in to his player option for 2026.
