“Mission Captis” is the final main story mission for act 2 of Destiny 2’s final episode, Heresy. But unlike most story missions in Destiny 2, it’s got a heavy puzzle element that can be quite tricky at the outset — even for the hive rune veterans out there.

In this Destiny 2 guide, we’ll walk you through how to launch the “Mission Captis” mission and how to “complete the binding” to finish Eris’ ritual.

How to start ‘Mission Captis’ in Destiny 2

“Mission Captis” comprises the 15th and 16th step (of 18 total) in the “Act 2: Rites of the Deep” quest for episode Heresy. You’ll run into it eventually as you complete the previous week’s stories, or it’ll simply appear in your inventory if you’ve already caught up on the previous week.

To launch the mission, head to The Last City on the Director and look down by Eris’ apartment (Variisis Core), where the rest of the Heresy activities live. You’ll see a new node on the far right side of this area. Click it and then hit launch to start “Mission Captis.”

How to complete the binding in ‘Mission Captis’

The mission will drop you off in the Hall of Souls to start, and will mark the big portal as your destination. Head over there to trigger Eris, who will appear at the top of the stairs. After a brief chat, she’ll ask you to stand on the plate in the middle of the room. Do it to trigger the fight.

The Resonant Knife, First of the Reshaped (the season’s big bad) will appear where Eris was and attempt to disrupt her ritual. Kill the Taken they summon, but avoid putting down any long-lasting area damage effects to save you some headache later. We also recommend using a weapon that has zero area effects — stay away from explosive payload, unraveling rounds, that sort of thing.

Eventually, you’ll get a notification that says “The Resonant Knife attempts to disrupt the ritual!” This is your signifier that the main puzzle in this mission has begun. Stay in the arena, but back up to get some cover. You’ll see a giant wall of Taken Acolyte’s Eyes, and a Hive symbol over the portal. The idea here is that you want to make the symbol above the portal by destroying some of the Taken eyes and leaving others.

This might sound like you need a degree in Destiny with a minor in Hive literature to put it all together, but there are two very simple tells that can help you solve this puzzle — as well as the two additional puzzles that come after:

  • The eyes you need to shoot will shoot at you and your Fireteam.
  • The eyes you need to shoot have a specific name: Eye of Vengeance.

If you don’t see an eye shoot at you or you notice that it’s called an Acolyte’s Eye instead of an Eye of Vengeance, do not shoot at it. If you destroy an incorrect eye, all other eyes will respawn.

After you’ve shot all the correct eyes, another wave of Taken enemies will appear. Kill them and then prepare for another puzzle, this time on the left side of the arena. Shoot the three Eyes of Vengeance, take out some more Taken, and complete the third rune puzzle on the right side of the room to complete the ritual and the mission.

You’ll now go on a quick NPC speech tour to finish out act 2.
