The Dallas Cowboys offseason of turmoil continues, this time with a weird trade rumor spreading. A Browns sports coverage show host reported that he had sources telling him a trade for Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is in works.

On the surface, it seems like a rumor so crazy that it could be true. However, because of financial reasons among plenty of other reasons, the trade rumor makes zero sense.

First off, it is hard to trust a non-big name in the NFL reporting industry with a story like this. It could be true in theory, but there is really no concrete reason to believe this rumor is true. It is just a rumor being spread, not an actual story.
Secondly, the money doesn’t line up properly, unless the Cowboys for some inexplicable reason are willing to take back Deshaun Watson.
Thirdly, the two sides agreed to a new contract just last year, with there even being a no-trade clause included. There is absolutely no reason for Prescott to want to leave Dallas for Cleveland right now. He would be leaving one bad situation for an even worse one.
The only thing that would remotely make sense for a trade like this would be multiple significant pieces going back and forth.
Other than Prescott and assumedly Watson, significant draft capital would have to be exchanged. The Browns just to get rid of Watson would likely have to attach draft capital, even if they weren’t getting Prescott in return.
That would mean the No. 2 pick in the draft would surely be sent back to the Cowboys in the deal. A fun aspect of that would be could the Cowboys then select quarterback Shedeur Sanders to replace Prescott in Dallas.
Deion Sanders at one point played for the Dallas Cowboys, which would make an extremely fascinating story, and has even been rumored in the past as a potential NFL head coach. Unfortunately for fans of drama, that is a fantasy world hypothetical.
While it would be fun from a news standpoint if all of that went down, this rumor is nothing but a rumor that only caught on because of how outlandish and little sense it made.
There is absolutely no reason for the Cowboys to trade Prescott right now, and there is absolutely no reason they should be trading him for Deshaun Watson’s horrid contract, even if it means netting multiple first-rounders as well.
Dallas is in a rough spot as a roster after losing multiple free agents, but that doesn’t mean they should all-out panic and trade their franchise quarterback who they just signed long-term.
