Wordle has been around only since October 2021, but, for many of us, it is already a part of our daily routine.
Whether it is to pass the time during a morning commute or something to focus on before going to sleep, the game is beloved by millions—including celebrities such as Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Meghan Markle.
The brainteaser was invented by software engineer Josh Wardle during the COVID-19 pandemic as a fun activity to be enjoyed by him and his partner. However, after quickly realizing its broader appeal, Wardle released it to the public and then later sold it to The New York Times.
How To Play Wordle
If you are new here, or you simply want a recap, the point of the game is to guess the five-letter word within six attempts. As you enter each guess, the color behind the letter will change.
Green means the letter is correct and in the right place; yellow means you have the right letter, but it is in the wrong place; and gray means the letter is not included in the word at all.
Wardle said there was a reason for this formula in an interview with Newsweek in 2022. “Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time, people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment,” he said.
In terms of his best tips to win the game, Wardle added: “A lot of people tend to think that the game is just about finding those green and gold letters. If you get those, then you theoretically have the information you need, but you don’t want to get too hung up on that.”
He continued: “Even when you have most of the letters, it’s still worth using a couple of tries to just narrow down the options further. It’s often just as important to learn what letters aren’t in a word. That information can actually be more powerful in a lot of ways, and you don’t necessarily realize it at first.”
The answer to Monday’s puzzle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution if you want to work it out for yourself.
