The New York Mets made a lot of huge additions this offseason, headlined by the $765 million signing of superstar Juan Soto.
Pair that with the reunions of Pete Alonso and Sean Manaea and you have a very successful offseason in the Big Apple.
But not everything has been smooth sailing. As we’ve closed in on opening day, the injuries have piled up for Mets pitchers. Offseason addition Frankie Montas isn’t set to return to the field for a chunk of the season and Manaea will miss some time, too.
New York needs to add a starter this season and the perfect option is on the market. Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery is on the trade market and the Diamondbacks would likely accept very little in return in order to offload his contract.
The Mets have made a habit of bringing in struggling pitchers and turning them around. They’ve done this with multiple arms over the last few years, and Montgomery could be the next one to add to the list.
Last season, Montgomery was horrible. He posted a 6.23 ERA in 117 innings for the Diamondbacks. But the year before, he posted an impressive 3.20 ERA across nearly 200 innings.
The Mets could potentially land a game-changing pitcher at the top of their rotation and there’s a chance the Diamondbacks would attach a prospect in the deal in order to get off Montgomery’s contract.
This could end up being a no-brainer for the Mets. The worst-case scenario is that the Mets end up having to cut Montgomery, but they would likely still walk away with a prospect.
