Kristian Campbell has been the talk of spring training for the Boston Red Sox.
With less than a week before opening day, he’s still in the running to win the second base job. However, one non-roster invitee could steal the thunder.
Campbell has just 19 games of Triple-A experience, so the Red Sox could choose to go with David Hamilton at second base. FanSided’s Zachary Rotman explained why the veteran could get the nod.
“Hamilton, on the other hand, played a good amount last season for the Red Sox, and even appeared in 15 MLB games in 2023,” wrote Rotman. “The Red Sox know exactly what they get with him. His bat isn’t extraordinary, but his glove at second base is superb, and he offers high-end speed with elite base-stealing ability.”
So far this spring, Hamilton has recorded a slash line of .265/.368/.449 while Campbell is hitting below .200. Hamilton also has over 300 career at-bats in the major leagues under his belt.
“Campbell needed to perform better than he has to win the job,” wrote Rotman. “Hamilton having the experience he does while also having a better spring than Campbell, makes the decision to hand the reins to him to start the year one that’s tough to argue against, as much as Red Sox fans would love to try to.”
That’s not to say Hamilton has the second base job for the entire season. If Campbell goes down to Worcester and heats up quickly at the plate, he could very easily get the call up and never look back.
