Israeli strikes in Gaza killed at least 26 people overnight, including a senior Hamas official and his wife, as the army continued its attacks across the Gaza Strip after a ceasefire deal fell apart.
The total number of Palestinians killed in Gaza since the start of the Israel-Hamas war has now passed 50,000 after Israel broke the ceasefire on Tuesday, with a wave of fresh strikes that has killed hundreds.
The Israel Defense Forces on Sunday called on Rafah residents in the Tel Sultan area to evacuate to the north.
Hamas said it would avenge the killing of Salah al-Bardawil, who was a senior member of the militant group’s political bureau.
“His blood, that of his wife and martyrs, will remain fueling the battle of liberation and independence,” Al Jazeera reported the group as saying. “The criminal enemy will not break our determination and will.”
Meanwhile, Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said it had been three weeks since the Israeli authorities banned the entry of food, medicines, water and fuel into Gaza.
“Every day that passes without the entry of aid means more children go to bed hungry, diseases spread & deprivation deepens,” Lazzarini wrote in a post on X.
