Severance season 3 is at the top of our wish list after the season finale aired this week, rounding off what has proved to be an intense season featuring more twists, turns and goats than we could have ever have anticipated.
Centering on Adam Scott’s character Mark S., the series unravels the endlessly unsettling world that surrounds Lumon, a company whose employees have undergone a “severance” procedure which sees their consciousness at work separated from their memories outside of work. Exploring the parallel yet conflicting dynamics between a person’s “innie’ and ‘outie,” this season served up a lot more than just pineapple bobbing and Milchick’s disarmingly slick all white snow ‘fit.

The actor chats with Glamour about portraying miscarriage on screen, how her own motherhood journey informed her character, and how she thinks Gemma really ended up at Lumon.
Following the dramatic season finale, we desperately need answers to several questions. Namely, what awaits Mark and Helly? And what’s next for Gemma? Is Cobel legitimately not evil now? Will Milchick ever call it a day at Lumon? Is this the end of data refinement as we know it? Will anyone actually miss Drummond? Clearly, there are a lot of loose ends that need tying up in Severance season 3, and we’re already counting down the days until we get it.
So what exactly is next for MDR and when will we be getting the next installment of the series? Here’s everything we know so far about when we can expect to see more from all of our favorite Lumon employees in Severance season 3.
Has Severance season 3 been confirmed?
Yes! On Friday, March 21, Apple TV+ announced that Severance season 3 would in fact be happening. It’s little wonder given the success the show has seen and the fact that there’s a lot of plot points that we’re craving more details on.
In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook took to X to confirm the news personally in a reply to Ben Stiller. He delivered the message in an on brand tone, and accompanied the message with a promotional teaser for the show’s third season:

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, series’director Ben Stiller said “there is a writers room underway in LA,” with the article explaining that “he hopes not to keep audiences waiting three years this time.”
Better still, in a November 2024 Collider interview, Stiller said, “You have a responsibility to the audience that you’re going somewhere with it. That’s always been a part of it for us, really understanding where it’s heading to…It should go as long as the story goes, and that’s something we have an idea of, and we’re working towards as we’re starting up our season 3 work.”
In a statement, Stiller—who directed five episodes in the second season—called working on Severance “one of the most creatively exciting experiences” he’s ever been a part of.”
Adam Scott (Mark S) also said in a statement that he “couldn’t be more excited to get back to work” with the Severance cast, adding “Oh hey also—not a huge deal—but if you see my innie, please don’t mention any of this to him. Thanks.”
It sounds like Severance season 3 is very much already in the works. Fingers crossed!
Is there a Severance season 3 release date yet?
Given that the second season only concluded this week, we’ve likely got a good while to wait until Severance season 3 arrives on our screens, though we’re hopeful that we won’t be having to hold out for as long as we did between seasons 1 and 2 given that the most recent season was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes.
Appearing on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, Stiller said “No, the plan is not to [wait three years]. Hopefully we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon.”

He added, “It took us a little bit to regroup, and the show, we shot for 186 days on season 2. Editing takes a while, but thank goodness the audience was there when we came back. The challenge was to get people who hadn’t seen the show to watch the first season, so Apple did a really good job of getting the word out and we did as much press as we could. Also, three years later, Apple TV+ is actually a different…it’s a different situation there now because they have more viewers. When we started out, we were one of the first shows.”
Given that the show has gone on to become one of the platform’s biggest series, we’d say that Stiller and the team have more than succeeded in spreading the word about what might well be one of our best-loved shows of all time.
While we’ve got some time to wait until Severance season 3, this news definitely bodes well for fans of the show. Watch this space!
Potential Severance season 3 cast
Given the storylines that we so desperately need answers to, we’d expect to see Adam Scott reprise his role of Mark Scout, with Britt Lower returning as Helly Riggs, Zach Cherry as Dylan George, John Turturro as Irving Bailiff, and Tramell Tillman as Seth Milchick.
We’d also likely see the following Severance cast members return for season 3:
- Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel
- Jen Tullock as Devon Scout-Hale
- Dichen Lachman as Ms Casey/Gemma Scout
- Michael Chernus as Ricken Hale
- Christopher Walken as Burt Goodman
- Sarah Bock as Miss Huang
Severance season 3 plot
At this point we’re knees deep in speculation around what could come next for our favorite Lumon employees.
Clearly, first and foremost we need to pick up from that cliffhanger ending and find out what happens after innie Mark locks Gemma out of Lumon and runs back into the building with Helly.
In an interview with Glamour, Dichen Lachman, who plays Gemma in the series, said “Even though I’m on the show, I’m a fan of the show, and you’re so torn. Britt’s done such a wonderful job of giving this Helly character life and with Mark S. and their dynamic. Then episode seven does kind of throw a spinner in the works because finally you are introduced to what Mark had on the outside world, which feels meaningful too. So it’s a real conundrum. Sometimes I joke that they have to find a new, modern way of a timeshare relationship.”
In another interview with Radio Times, Lachman explained, “It was almost two years ago that I heard about the rooms with the airplane and the turbulence, and then the dentist. But as soon as they start talking about that, I was like, ‘OK, yeah, maybe [Lumon] are trying to build a commercial device so that people don’t have to go through things that are unpleasant.”
Clearly, there’s a lot more that we need answers to, including how Gemma even got there to begin with. And that’s all before we’ve even got into what Lumon is actually doing, whether we’ll see more of Irving again, if Helly R. will now become Helena Eagan, the inevitable fallout that will follow Drummond being killed, Milchick’s seemingly brewing disdain for Lumon, or what’s up next for Miss Huang.
Needless to say, there’s plenty of material we’d like to see fleshed out in Severance season 3.
Is there a Severance season 3 trailer?
While there’s no full Severance season 3 trailer yet, we did get a little teaser from Apple which already has us buzzing for the next season of the show:
And if that’s not enough for you, feel free to revel in all the glory of the season 2 trailer below. Enjoy.
