Praise Kier! Severance has officially been renewed for a third season.
This exciting news comes just a day after the Season 2 finale of the Apple TV+ workplace thriller.
What initially started as a niche sci-fi mystery with a dedicated fanbase has now become Apple TV+’s most-watched series to date, according to the streaming platform, thanks to its second season.
The series, created by Dan Erickson and directed and executive produced by Ben Stiller, stars Adam Scott as Mark Scout, a man who undergoes a procedure to split his work and personal lives. As Mark’s “outie” mourns the death of his wife, his “innie” leads a completely separate existence behind the walls of the mysterious biotech company, Lumon. Naturally, Lumon and its experimental severance procedure are not exactly as they appear.
In the first season, Mark and his colleagues—Helly (Britt Lower), Dylan (Zach Cherry), and Irving (John Turturro)—begin a rebellion against the company by figuring out how to awaken their “innie” personas in the outside world. In Season 2, they face the disturbing truths that they uncover about their lives beyond the office.
The cast of Severance also includes Tramell Tillman, Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, and Michael Chernus.
During the three-year hiatus between Seasons 1 and 2, the sci-fi mystery series cultivated a dedicated following. Ahead of the Season 2 premiere, creator Erickson shared with Variety that “a lot is mapped out” for Season 3, adding that “there is an endpoint for the series as a whole, and we know more or less how many seasons we are going to do.”
Alongside Stiller and Erickson, the executive producers include Nicholas Weinstock, Jackie Cohn, Mark Friedman, Andrew Colville, Chris Black, John Cameron, Beau Willimon, Caroline Baron, Jordan Tappis, and Scott. The production companies behind the series are Fifth Season, Red Hour Productions, Westward, and Animals & People.
Ben Stiller expressed his excitement about the show’s success: “Making ‘Severance’ has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of. While I have no memory of this, I’m told making Season 3 will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.”
Adam Scott also shared his enthusiasm: “I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work with Ben, Dan, the incredible cast and crew, Apple, and the whole ‘Severance’ team. Oh hey also — not a huge deal — but if you see my innie, please don’t mention any of this to him. Thanks.”
Dan Erickson, the creator, reflected on the thrill of continuing the story: “The idea of getting to make more ‘Severance’ with the greatest cast and crew on Earth is more thrilling to me than all the world’s finger traps combined. I can’t wait to continue spreading woe, frolic, dread, and malice with these truly incredible people.”
Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, praised the series: “What Ben, Dan, Adam, and the talented cast and crew behind ‘Severance’ have brought to the screen is undeniable magic. We’re so proud to be the home for this brilliant series and look forward to audiences experiencing what’s in store for Season 3.”
