The Boston Red Sox traded four prospects to the Chicago White Sox earlier this offseason to acquire Garrett Crochet. The team traded Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman Gonzalez.
All four players were top 30 prospects in the organization, with Teel and Montgomery being top 100 prospects to boot.
Trading four talented prospects for Crochet makes sense if he is going to be in Boston for more than the two seasons remaining on his deal. However, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo revealed that the two sides are not close to getting an extension done.
“For months, the Red Sox have identified a contract extension for top starter Garrett Crochet as a major priority,” wrote Cotillo. “Barring something unexpected, the club won’t get one done before Opening Day. A source with knowledge of the talks told MassLive late Friday that a Crochet extension is less than likely before he starts for the Red Sox on Opening Day (Thursday). There is believed to be a large gap between the sides at present.”
Last season was Crochet’s first season as a starter. He had a 3.58 ERA and 209 strikeouts in 32 starts. He was named an All-Star and showed he has what it takes to be an elite starter in the big leagues. He finished spring training with 30 strikeouts and a .073 ERA.
Crochet is slated to start on opening day for the Red Sox. However, until the team can come to terms on an extension with him, there is a chance the Red Sox gave up two top 100 prospects for just two seasons of Crochet.
