Two teams that found themselves with high hopes to enter the season are fighting for their playoff lives as the Philadelphia 76ers (23-46) travel to Texas to take on the San Antonio Spurs (29-39) in a matchup both teams need to win.

The Spurs had a strong preseason plan: pair rising star Victor Wembanyama with veterans Harrison Barnes and Chris Paul, hoping their experience would help fast-track Wemby’s rise to superstardom. And early on, it was working—the team started 18-16. But injuries piled up, and eventually, Wembanyama was ruled out for the season. Still, there’s reason for optimism: the Spurs acquired De’Aaron Fox from the Kings and look poised to be a serious threat next season.
Meanwhile, for the 76ers, this was supposed to be the year they got over the hump, adding in megastar Paul George to pair with Joel Embiid and blossoming scorer Tyrese Maxey. Instead, they started 3-14 and are currently mired in a 4-19 stretch, trotting out lineups featuring players who are not accustomed to carrying a team. In their last game (a 133-100 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder), Quentin Grimes scored 28 points to go with five assists and three steals to lead the team.
