Dalilah Agbisit, a 22-year-old woman who is undergoing cancer treatment, has shared footage to TikTok of her father’s response after she revealed to him that she had started losing her hair.
Agbisit, who is stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Stewart in Georgia, sent a video to her father, Adam, back home in Washington state, showing the impact of the radiation therapy she is currently undergoing.
“I had surgery at the beginning of the year to remove a tumor in my parotid gland,” Agbisit told Newsweek. “The pathology came back as stage 2 acinic cell carcinoma which is a rare type of salivary gland cancer. I began radiation treatment in February and have been going through a whirlwind of side effects.”
One of those side effects has been the loss of some of her hair. An understandably alarming experience, when Agbisit recently discovered a clump of her hair had fallen out as a result of the radiation treatment, she did what anyone in her position would do if they could: she called her dad.
Though they may be far apart geographically, video call technology has allowed Agbisit’s dad to be by her side whenever she needs him.
“He’s been doing everything he can from far away to make sure I’m taken care of and remain in good spirits through everything,” she said.
So, after sending him a video showing the hair loss, Agbisit wasn’t surprised to get an almost immediate response, again via video, from her father. What might have caught her off-guard, however, was the unexpected nature of his reply. But it was the best possible surprise.
Mimicking her actions from the clip she had sent him, Adam touched the side of his own head to show he too was losing his hair. What made it hilarious, however, was the fact that Agbisit’s father is already almost entirely bald.
It’s often said that laughter is the best medicine. There is some truth to that claim. A 2023 study published in the journal PLoS One found a link between spontaneous laughter and a significant reduction in cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone most commonly associated with stress, suggesting laughter was an effective way to boost general well-being.
Adam’s joking response, while unconventional, certainly appeared to have a positive impact on his daughter. “It made me laugh for sure,” she said.
Though unexpected, Agbisit said it wasn’t entirely out of character for her father to react in that way. “He always tries to remain lighthearted during hard times and his humor has got me through a lot whether it be some small thing I’m stressed over or what I’m going through right now,” she said.
Eager to share his reaction with the world, Agbisit posted her clip, along with her dad’s reply, to TikTok under the handle @dalilah.biscuit. At the time of writing, the video has been watched 2.3 million times.
“I thought people would find it funny and relatable, so I wanted to share it,” she said. “I just wanted to share a quick lighthearted interaction between a father and a daughter and we were delightfully surprised so many people enjoyed it.”
Agbisit was keen to thank everyone for their “support and kind words” and stressed she won’t lose all her hair, just “the treatment area along the side of my face and neck.”
In the meantime, her treatment continues, with more sweet videos from her father sure to follow as a result.
