Will There Be A Severance Season 3 On Apple TV+?
As of Severance‘s Season 2 finale day, March 20, Apple TV+ had yet to officially renew the acclaimed workplace thriller for a third season. But fans absolutely shouldn’t be worried about the future of Severance. The show is a smash hit for Apple TV+, and Season 3 is all but officially confirmed.
In February, shortly after Severance‘s long-awaited Season 2 premiere, Severance surpassed Ted Lasso and became the streamer’s most-watched series. On top of that, TheWrap recently reported that the sophomore season hit more than three billion streaming minutes, so it’s hard to imagine a world in which Apple TV+ wouldn’t want to savor that success as long as possible.
If that wasn’t enough to convince you your dearly beloved Severance is safe, per The Hollywood Reporter, “Ben Stiller says there is a [Season 3] writers room underway in L.A.” When asked if he could tease anything at all about a potential Season 3, creator Dan Erickson told Decider, “There will probably be some office stuff. There will probably be some existential stuff. There will probably be a laugh or two. There will probably be some creepy moments. It’s going to be all the things that the show is — assuming that it happens. But it’s definitely something that we’ve talked about. It’s all still pretty close to the vest.”
Severance Season 3 Premiere Date:
Since Severance isn’t officially renewed yet, a predicted premiere date isn’t public. But Stiller has publicly said he doesn’t want to keep audiences waiting three years this time, which sounds promising! During an interview on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, Stiller said, “The plan is not to [wait three years]… Hopefully we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon.”
Stiller also offered additional context on the extended gap between Season 1 and Season 2, which included the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. “It took us a little bit to regroup, and the show, we shot for 186 days on Season 2. Editing takes a while, but thank goodness the audience was there when we came back,” he explained on the podcast.
While we’ll have to stay tuned for additional writing and production updates, with any luck, here’s hoping we can return to (Lumon’s) office some time in 2026, and definitely not 2028. So what do Severance fans have to look forward to?
Severance Season 2 Ending Explained: What Will Severance Season 3 Be About?
Before we dive into potential Season 3 storylines, let’s refresh on Season 2, Episode 10, “Cold Harbor.” If you’re looking for a full rundown of the finale, Decider’s got you covered, but the crux of Season 3 will undoubtedly be inspired by all the jaw-dropping cliffhangers.
Warning: Season 2 finale spoilers ahead!
In the penultimate episode, Burt saved Irving by banishing him from Kier. Both beloved characters have unfinished storylines and lots more to explore, but are the actors returning? We’ll have to wait and see! After Lumon did him dirty all season, an exhausted Milchick ends the season surrounded by a room full of his subordinates who are ready to fight for their rights. But will he join the rebellion and abandon his loyalties to the company like Cobel or double down on his duties in a last-ditch effort to save his job? That’s a Season 3 reveal as well.
The biggest finale surprise by far unfolded in the episode’s final minutes, when Innie Mark successfully helped Ms. Casey escape the Severed Floor. She stepped out into the exit stairwell and switched back to Gemma, but when she called for Mark to do the same, he hung back. Helly appeared at the end of the hall, shouted his name, and he decided to betray his outie’s trust and pursue his own love story. Leaving Gemma behind, he grabbed Helly’s hand and the two made a run for it down Lumon’s twisty halls as the alarm blared and red lights flashed overhead. So what happens next? What is Lumon’s grand mysterious plan for the severance procedure? And how far does the corruption span? We’ll have to wait and see.
In the meantime, be sure to catch up on Decider’s Severance coverage for in-depth recaps, analysis, interviews with cast and creators, and more helpful show insights.
