Cate Blanchett is longing for a pre-social media era of awards shows.

The 2x Oscar winner recently made the case for non-televised awards shows after she discovered the “blasphemy” of lip readers on TikTok who reveal what celebs are saying in videos from the exclusive events.

“Go back to the day when it wasn’t televised,” she said on the Las Culturistas podcast. “Bring that back and just have a great party where people can just let go.”

Blanchett continued, “I mean, the fashion is great, and all of that stuff. We’ll find out in the end who won or who didn’t win. But it would be so nice that that happened behind closed doors. Absolutely a very different evening.”

During the podcast, the Black Bag actress also decried the lack of privacy amid the age of social media. “There’s so few spaces that you can go now, where you are private,” she told co-hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.

“That’s what I loved about the late ’80s, going to all of the dance parties in Sydney for Mardi Gras,” said Blanchett. “People were just there. They were so present, you know, they were just together, collectively, having a great time. It was non-aggressive. No one was being recorded. No one cared what anyone did.”

Blanchett has previously won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Aviator (2004) and Best Actress for Blue Jasmine (2013), in addition to six other nominations.

This year, she earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress — Limited Series or Television Film for her role in Disclaimer.
