The New York Yankees have suffered some key injuries to their starting rotation. Gerrit Cole will miss the entire season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and Luis Gil will miss time with a lat injury.
The Yankees may not want to pay the price for a player like Dylan Cease, Sandy Alcántara, Luis Castillo or Michael King. However, they could land a decent arm to add to the mix from the San Francisco Giants. FanSided’s Nick San Miguel proposed this trade that would send Jordan Hicks to the Yankees:
- Yankees receive: right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks
- Giants receive: left-handed pitcher Tim Hill
The Yankees re-signed Hill to a one-year, $2.8 million deal this offseason. His deal includes a $3 million club option for 2027. The Yankees would be parting ways with one of their reliable southpaws.
“In return, New York would be getting an electric, if sometimes unruly, arm who has flashed potential as a starter,” wrote San Miguel. “It is a move that could be beneficial for both sides if executed.”
Hicks signed a four-year, $44 million deal with the Giants last year. He made 20 starts and appeared as a reliever nine times last season. He had a 4.10 ERA overall, but his ERA was slightly better as a starter than as a relief pitcher. The Giants could be willing to part ways with him to fill a need in the bullpen.
“After the Giants traded away left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers, they created an opening for a lefty reliever in the bullpen alongside Erik Miller,” wrote San Miguel. “There is no guarantee the Giants will carry two left-handed relievers, but if manager Bob Melvin thinks that is a necessity, then having the veteran Tim Hill on the team could be a wise move.”
The Yankees are less than two weeks away from opening day. They could simply wait until the trade deadline to add a starter, but they would risk falling too far behind in the American League standings.
