A New Mexico man faces federal assault charges for two incidents in which he allegedly called Border Patrol agents “traitors” and violently attacked in a small border town.

A border patrol agent was eating lunch Feb. 11 at a Love’s truck stop in Santa Teresa — which is just across the border from Juarez, Mexico — when Andrew Josiah Segura, 28, walked up and called him a “traitor” and said “I will slap the s— out of” him, according to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court.

A week after the truck stop incident, Segura allegedly screamed at two other uniformed agents at a post office and attacked one, getting into a violent scuffle that left the agent with bruises on his arm.

The pair of agents had been collecting mail for their office when Segura approached, called them both traitors, then read the name of one agent off the paperwork he had been filling out, telling him “you better watch your back,” prosecutors allege.

After post office employees yelled at Segura to leave, he got into his car and drove around the building several times before walking back inside with his hand in his pocket, as if he were holding a gun, witnesses told investigators.

“Segura entered the post office the second time, [the agent] attempted to de-escalate the situation by reaching out to shake Segura’s hand as a gesture of peace, to which Segura responded by pushing [him],” according to the court complaint

The ensuing scuffle left bruises on the agent’s arm, prosecutors said.

Segura allegedly fled the scene when he heard approaching police sirens.

Witnesses said both attacks appeared to be unprovoked and that Segura seemed to specifically target the CBP agents.

Segura faces up to eight years in prison if found guilty for the assaults.
