Wait, is there some kind of beef going on between Meghan Sussex (née Markle) and Gwyneth Paltrow? Well, according to certain corners of the internet, there might be. But if there is some kind of ill-feeling between these two, it’s all being kept under a significant veil of politeness, as we would expect from two such elegant lifestyle gurus whose personal brands both depend on being seen as gracious hostesses.
So, how did all of this begin?
As you are no doubt aware, Meghan Sussex recently released her new, unscripted lifestyle/cooking show on Netflix, With Love, Meghan. With her gleaming, Nancy Meyers-tinged kitchen set (more on that in a minute), expansive garden, and emphasis on preparing simple, healthy, and entirely homemade food, with a purchasable line of products attached, you can see where the Goop comparisons come in. Not to mention the fact that Paltrow and the Sussexes live in the same Montecito neighborhood.
What has Paltrow said?
Paltrow told Vanity Fair that, although she doesn’t know Meghan and Prince Harry personally, she has met the duchess and finds her to be “lovely.” Asked if she sees Meghan’s latest lifestyle project as competition, the actor said, “I was raised to see other women as friends, not foes. I think there’s always more than enough to go around. Everybody deserves an attempt at everything that they want to try.”
Internet opinions appear to be divided on whether Paltrow was whole-heartedly defending the duchess, or whether there is shade to be read into Paltrow’s use of the word, “attempt.”
(We should point out that, generally speaking, the instinct to assume two women in the same field are fighting, or that they’re ruthlessly competitive with each other, is an instinct rooted in misogyny.)

A day after Paltrow’s Vanity Fair interview was published, Goop posted a cooking video with trainer-to-the-stars Tracy Anderson, who says, “Welcome to my actual kitchen,” at the top of the clip. And many fans are taking this as a slight to Meghan, who did not film her cooking show at her real house. Instagram comments include, “Grown adult woman being shady to another woman while making a glorified coleslaw. Tasteless,” and, “You’re in your actual kitchen because nobody is checking for you like they are the duchess. Hope this helps,” and, “The attempted shade was very lame and very embarrassing for you.”
So, does this mean that Meghan Markle and Gwyneth Paltrow are actually beefing? Honestly, it’s hard to tell. But that won’t stop social media speculation.
