The New York Yankees have made a lot of very important decisions over the last 365 days. Right now, they’re backed against the corner with a destroyed starting pitching rotation.
But the pitching rotation isn’t the only glaring weakness on the Yankees’ roster. Manager Aaron Boone’s team comes into the year with a plethora of struggling options to play at third base.
FanSided’s Jacob Mountz recently predicted the Yankees could designate former top prospect Oswald Peraza for assignment this season if he doesn’t step up his play. Peraza is expected to compete with Oswaldo Cabrera for the starting third base job.
“Once considered a future star, Peraza is in danger of being DFA’d in the coming weeks,” Mountz wrote. “While the Yankees will clearly want to keep one of their most promising prospects in recent history, their hands appear to be tied. Peraza is out of minor-league options.
“He will need to make the Major League roster out of spring training to avoid being designated. This spring, Peraza has struggled posting a meager .194 batting average. And without hitting a single dinger thus far, it seems his once-lauded power potential is no longer a viable threat.”
Peraza’s lack of options could be the nail in his coffin. Whether the Yankees need to bring somebody like Jorbit Vivas to the big league roster or move Peraza in a trade, it seems as though his time is coming to an end.
He’s been quite disappointing for the Bronx Bombers. Once considered an elite prospect with elite tools, the infielder could be headed for the end of his Yankees career. It’s scary how quickly it can happen.
