Taiwan’s film industry is out in force at Filmart with a slew of new projects, including upcoming feature films Penguin Girl, That Burning House and 96 Minutes and ten-episode series A Controversial Entertainer.

Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) is presenting these projects, along with their key creative teams and cast members, at a showcase in Filmart today.

Penguin Girl, from first time feature director Yuyu Yang, is a fantasy romance starring Charlize Lamb and Hua Chen who will both be attending today’s showcase. The film, which premiered as the opening film of last year’s Kaohsiung Film Festival, follows a young woman who studies the marital life of penguins and believes humans can also find true love. Distribution Workshop is handling international sales.

That Burning House, directed by Tsai Yin-chuan, delves into social issues surrounding child protection and juvenile crime. Currently in post-production, the film is produced by the creative team behind 2021 Golden Bell-nominated series Tears On Fire. The cast includes Fandy Fan and Tseng Jing Hua who are both in Filmart to talk about the film. Hope Content Marketing is handling sales.

Also in post-production is action movie 96 Minutes, directed by Hung Tzu-Hsuan, about a bomb crisis on a high-speed train running between Taipei and Kaohsiung. Wowing Entertainment Group is handling international distribution. Cast members Lee-Zen Lee, Yi-Ti Yao and Jacob Wang will all be present at the showcase.

Currently in pre-production, black comedy TV series A Controversial Entertainer tells the story of an unexpected transformation of five guys into top male hosts. Producer-actor Chen I, actress Nana Lee and eight other cast members will attend the Filmart showcase.

Meanwhile, two Taiwanese projects in development have been selected for Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), which runs concurrently with Filmart. Taiwanese music video director Bill Chia is presenting his debut feature film, Indigo Boy, while Malaysian filmmaker Edmund Yeo has Taiwan-Malaysia co-production The Age Of Goodbyes.

HAF’s Works-in-Progress (WIP) section has selected five international co-productions involving Taiwan: Fuxi, Girlfriends, Moonglow, A Woman Builds and animated feature A Mighty Adventure.

Around 90 Taiwanese companies are attending the market under TAICCA’s Taiwan Pavilion umbrella, with projects on offer also including drama series and unscripted works such as reality show The King Of Nightmarket, drama series Tabloid, adapted from a bestselling novel about Taiwan’s entertainment industry; and romance series Marriage Exposed. Documentaries on offer include Dear Black Sheep, produced and narrated by Bowie Tsang, which sheds light on cancer awareness.
