Live with Kelly and Mark viewers got a taste of what Mark Consuelos sounds like in the gym, courtesy of Kelly Ripa.
Ripa was quick to call out her husband and co-host on Tuesday morning’s episode after he read that “some people can’t help making a little noise during exertion.”
“I know somebody sitting next to me that’s very noisy,” she pointed out.
Consuelos read out the “physiological benefits” of letting out a grunt or scream may “improve strength and striking power,” as well as “oxygen use,” researchers are “not exactly sure how this works.”
“‘There are psychological effects.’ Like when I was learning how to box, I’d go, ‘Tss, tss, tss, tss, tss, tss, tss, tss,’ because it sounds cool,” he admitted. “No other reason for that.”
Ripa further attested to Consuelos’ workout noises by recalling being at the gym together, where she was working with her trainer over FaceTime.
“We were doing some leg lifts and stuff, and Mark was lifting weights. He was doing squats in the corner, where he belongs,” she joked.
As Consuelos was doing back squats, he was out of her trainer’s view, though she could certainly hear him, as Ripa recalled Consuelos grunting.
“She thought I was making that sound, but, like, my lips weren’t moving, and she was like, ‘How are you making that sound?’” Ripa explained.
Consuelos quipped, “She’s a ventriloquist.”
After Live EP Michael Gelman chimed in asking why, Ripa replied, “Right. What are we doing to elicit that sound? And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s Mark. He’s in the corner.’”
While Consuelos aired his “doubt” as to whether he actually sounded like Ripa made him out to, she reiterated, “That’s exactly the sound.”
Consuelos teased that he “sound[s] like a tennis match,” which only reminded he and Ripa of their daughter Lola’s boyfriend Cassius, who is a “really good tennis player.” Consuelos proceeded to groan loudly as he mimicked tennis passes, eliciting laughter from the audience.
“He doesn’t sound like that,” Ripa insisted, though Consuelos begged to differ.
“Never told him that,” Consuelos conceded. “He knows now.”
Ripa offered up her best impression of Cassius’ tennis noises, while Consuelos stuck to his grunts.
“And then occasionally he’ll drop, like, an F-bomb. And that’s when I’m like, ‘Yeah, go, yes!’” she exclaimed.
