Sara Haines and Ana Navarro were going at it on this morning’s episode of The View.
During the first Hot Topics segment of the day, Haines agreed with Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer‘s decision to vote in favor of a government funding bill to avoid a government shutdown, despite the backlash he’s faced from Democrats in his own party for doing so.
“I think that he had two awful options and this was the one that he chose,” Haines said. “I actually agree — a government shutdown never looks good on the party that seems to be the one that’s asking for it. The Dems had this option. I don’t see it as acquiescing. I don’t see it as anything.”
According to Haines, the bigger “criticism” is that of DOGE and Elon Musk, who has been firing large swaths of federal workers ever since President Donald Trump took office. Haines feared that with a government shutdown, no one would be there to stop Musk from conducting mass firings.
“There are two dozen cases in court right now questioning whether he has the authority to do that, whether it’s constitutional,” she said. “You shut the government down, you give them legal permission for the executive branch to do whatever the hell he wants.”
Navarro, however, did not agree with Haines.
“I love you, but I don’t buy that explanation from you or from Schumer because they’re already doing that,” she said, referring to Trump and Musk gutting federal agencies. “They’re doing that illegally or legally. They don’t care about the courts.”
But Haines fired back, “Do you care that one has a leg to stand on in the courts that says, ‘This is not constitutional,’ which I will stand beside and continue to hope the courts hold out. But this is just take off all the guardrails and let them do whatever the hell they want.”
Still, Navarro dug her heels in, telling Haines, “I think that when the Democratic base is hearing Chuck Schumer say, ‘The reason that I’m going to support this funding bill is because if not, it’s going to give Trump and Elon the power to fire federal workers and to get rid of departments.’ They’re already doing that!”
When Haines chimed in, “So you don’t care about —,” Navarro quickly cut her off, saying, “It doesn’t matter what I care about, it’s already happening!”
Haines once again reminded Navarro that “it’s in the courts,” but Navarro argued, “They pay no attention to the court judgments!”
