President Donald Trump took to Truth Social, his social media platform, on Sunday to announce his latest championship win at one of his golf clubs, calling the victory a “great honor” and suggesting it is “probably” his last.
Newsweek filed out an online contact form with the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach for comment on Sunday afternoon.
Why It Matters
Golf has been a significant part of Trump’s life, both as a player and a business venture. He has invested heavily in the sport, owning numerous courses worldwide and having won several tournaments.
During his first presidential term, Trump played golf at least 142 times, according to Forbes. These outings often came at a significant cost, as presidential golf trips require Air Force One travel, as well as extensive U.S. Secret Service protection and security disruptions in the local area. Several critics have raised concerns about the expenses of Trump’s hobby.
Trump previously criticized former President Barack Obama for golfing too much while in office and told supporters back in 2016, “I’m going to be working for you. I’m not going to have time to play golf.”
What To Know
Trump announced Sunday that he “just won the Golf Club Championship, probably my last, at Trump International Golf Club, in Palm Beach County, Florida.” He called the victory “such a great honor” and thanked the staff and participants in his Truth Social post.
The 78-year-old noted that this victory is “probably my last.”
The Men’s Club Championship tournament was held on Sunday. Trump has previously won similar tournaments in 2023 and 2024, posting about both of the victories on Truth Social at the time.
In 2023, he said his victory “serves as a physical exam, only MUCH tougher. You need strength and stamina to WIN, & I have strength & stamina – most others don’t. You also need strength & stamina to GOVERN!”
Trump has visited Florida at least six times since his inauguration on January 20. The Guardian reported that each time Trump flies from the White House to Palm Beach, it costs taxpayers approximately $1 million.
A recent HuffPost analysis found that as of March 8, Trump’s Florida golf weekends since inauguration have cost taxpayers a total of $18 million.
During his first presidency in 2017, he spent more than half of the first seven weekends in Florida golfing. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) evaluated his first four trips to Mar-a-Lago as costing around $13.6 million in total, around $3.4 million per trip, per a 2019 report.
Concerns over the cost of his golf endeavors come as the Trump administration is pursuing aggressive cuts to the federal workforce in an effort to shrink the government and federal spending through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
What People Are Saying
Ed Krassenstein, an anti-Trump influencer with 1 million followers on X, formerly Twitter, wrote Saturday: “Trump’s Motorcade just arrived at Palm Beach Golf Club! This weekend trip costs taxpayers between $3-4 million. DOGE should work to cut these out. It would make government much more efficient.”
X account “Republicans against Trump” posted an alleged video of Trump golfing, with the ball going in the entirely wrong direction and wrote: “What do you notice in this video of Trump playing golf?”
