Memphis beat UAB both times these two programs matched up during the regular season with a 100-77 win the first time around and an 88-81 victory earlier in the month. PJ Haggerty scored a combined 48 points in the two games, and the Blazers will have their hands full trying to slow him down once again.
Haggerty ranks third in the nation at 21.8 points per game this season as only a sophomore. He is capable of putting up ridiculous numbers like he did in the Tigers’ quarterfinal 83-80 win over Wichita State in which he scored 42 points to go along with nine rebounds, four assists, a block, and three steals. If he gets going here, it could be a long day for UAB. Memphis is the winner of seven in a row entering this AAC title game.
UAB will rely on Yaxel Lendeborg as they try to pull off the upset. Lendeborg leads the Blazers, averaging 17.7 points per game, and the senior forward has been on fire over his past two outings, scoring a combined 53 points in their quarterfinal and semifinal games. He might not be able to surpass the production of Haggerty on the other side, but if he can at least match his output, it will give UAB a solid chance to secure an NCAA Tournament birth.
