police in the eastern city of Gera are investigating a case of attempted murder after a man doused a woman in a tram in a combustible liquid on Sunday morning and set it alight, inflicting life-threatening injuries.
A police spokeswoman said the woman had been flown to a hospital by helicopter after the attack, whose motivation remains unclear.
The suspected attacker, who fled the scene, has “not yet been identified by name,” the spokeswoman said. An investigation was ongoing, she said.
No one else was injured in the attack, which occurred around 10 a.m. local time (0900 UTC).

Other passengers in the tram pressed the emergency stop button after the attack, something the suspect exploited to make his escape, according to the spokeswoman.
The driver of the vehicle reacted quickly and began dousing the flames with a fire extinguisher, she said.
The woman received medical treatment on the scene before being flown to hospital, the spokeswoman said.
She said the other passengers and the driver were offered psychological care.
