Babak Anvari is set to direct a new sequel to Cloverfield, which is reportedly a direct sequel to Matt Reeves’s original 2008 film.
In a new interview during the SXSW premiere of his latest film Hallow Road, Anvari teased the new sequel.
“So sad that I cannot because everyone on that team is very secretive, which I understand,” Anvari told Countdown City Geeks. “But whatever happens, just know that hopefully you’re going to get something amazing.”
Although Anvari didn’t disclose any details about the follow-up film, he did express his excitement about the project as “high.”

Cloverfield is a found-footage horror film which follows six people fleeing from a monster attack in New York City. The film starred Michael Stahl-David, Odette Yustman, Mike Vogel, Jessica Lucas, T.J. Miller, Lizzy Caplan, Ben Feldman, and more.
The movie inspired follow-up films set in the same universe, such as 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane and 2018’s The Cloverfield Paradox.
The franchise also inspired a manga graphic novel titled Cloverfield/Kishin, which detailed the lives of two students seeking shelter before the Chuai incident seen in the film’s viral marketing campaign.
