Purdue beat USC 90-72 when these two programs matched up during the regular season despite a 30-point performance from the Trojans’ freshman guard Wesley Yates III. Trey Kaufman-Renn scored an efficient 24 points on 8/12 shooting from the field for the Boilermakers. Kaufman-Renn should be in for another big night after leading Purdue this season with 19.7 points per game, which ranked 25th in the nation.
After a disappointing 16-16 record this year, the Trojans’ only real shot at making the NCAA Tournament would be to win the Big Ten, which would guarantee them a spot in the Big Dance. Purdue could get in without taking home first place in the Big Ten Tournament, as they finished the regular season as the 20th ranked team in the nation, but a loss here would significantly hurt their chances.
The Boilermakers have lost five out of their past seven games, and USC is coming off a 97-89 double overtime win over Rutgers, making this matchup a potential upset if the Trojans can carry over some of the momentum from their round one win.
