Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos were bugging out over a new health craze on Live with Kelly and Mark.
Ripa kicked off Thursday’s episode by declaring that “the future of nutrition is upon us.”
“I like to break stories here. Gelman, I know you do, too. We like a science article,” she told the show’s executive producer. “And scientists say that cockroach milk is the future of nutrition.”
Consuelos replied with an appropriate, “What?”
“More nutritious than cow’s milk. Delicious, in fact,” Ripa added.
Once again asking the proper questions, Consuelos inquired as to “who milks the cockroaches.” (Great question, Mark.) Ripa then said she’s “been milking” the cockroach that resides in her bathroom at work.
“My cockroach is larger than your average cockroach,” she jokingly noted. “We take good care of her.”
Ripa then pulled out tweezers and detailed how to milk a cockroach, highlighting that hers is named “Beverly.”
“You gotta flip over the cockroach, and you gotta access the teats. The best way to do that is with tweezers, and you just tweezer milk, tweezer milk, tweezer milk,” she shared. “Much to the way you would an almond, say, or an olive. You milk the cockroach.”
Ripa also had a small glass some of her (allegedly) “own farm-raised cockroach milk” for a reluctant Consuelos to taste.
“Nope,” he said, but Ripa urged, “Give it a try,” as her husband fired back, “No, you give it a try.”
Ripa deadpanned, “I drink it all the time. It’s in my coffee right now.”
As Consuelos went to take a sip, Ripa described the beverage as “a little nutty” and “pasteurized.” Afterward, Consuelos let out an “mmm” and offered his thoughts: “I would say this is like a New York City vintage,” he teased.
Ripa quipped, “Taste the pizza?”
While Consuelos said he could “taste the pizza,” he insisted, “Is that real? C’mon guys, that’s not real.”
Whether or not the milk on Live actually came from a cockroach — and it likely did not, although we regret to note the substance is real and its nutritional benefits have been praised — Ripa read that “recent studies suggest there may be a new contender in the superfood category, and it is in fact cockroach milk.”
“It may be three times more nutritious than cow’s milk,” she continued. “Listen, cockroaches live forever, so we might want to think about what they have to offer us.”
Consuelos proposed, “We could’ve solved the milk issue.”
Ripa agreed, adding, “If only they laid eggs like chickens. Farm-raised cockroach eggs. Yum.”
