People all over the globe love playing Wordle, and the fun word-based game has maintained its popularity since its release in October 2021.
Today, it boasts a massive following, including celebrities like Meghan Markle, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and more.
“Allison and I, we Wordle,” Burnett told Entertainment Tonight in April 2023. “We just Wordle back and forth. She’s the first one every morning at my coffee.”
How to Play ‘Wordle’
The goal of the game is to guess the daily five-letter word in six attempts or less. Green tiles indicate the letter is in the word and in the correct place; yellow tiles indicate the letter is in the word, though not in the correct spot; and gray tiles indicate the letter is not in the word at all.
Josh Wardle came up with the brainteaser during the COVID-19 pandemic as an activity for him and his partner to enjoy, before selling it to The New York Times for an undisclosed fee.
In an interview with Newsweek back in 2022, the software engineer said that while he was “reluctant to tell anybody how they should play,” he encouraged “people to experiment with different ideas and to find their own [starting] words, rather than just sticking to the same proven tactics over and over again.”
“One thing I will say is that a lot of people tend to think that the game is just about finding those green and gold letters. If you get those, then you theoretically have the information you need, but you don’t want to get too hung up on that,” Wardle shared with readers at the time.
“Even when you have most of the letters, it’s still worth using a couple of tries to just narrow down the options further. It’s often just as important to learn what letters aren’t in a word. That information can actually be more powerful in a lot of ways, and you don’t necessarily realize it at first.”
Luckily, there’s no time limit to the game and you don’t need a subscription to The New York Times to play.

As a noun, Merriam-Webster defines the term as “a footprint whether recent or fossil,” “a course laid out especially for racing,” “the parallel rails of a railroad,” “a sequence of events: a train of ideas: succession,” “the tread of an automobile tire” and many more.
As a verb, it means “to search for by following evidence until found,” “to observe or plot the moving path of (something, such as a spacecraft or missile) often instrumentally,” “to carry (mud or other material) on the feet and deposit, i.e. tracking mud into the kitchen,” “to keep track of (something, such as a trend)” and others.
Give yourself a pat on the back if you answered today’s Wordle correctly! If you didn’t, don’t worry. You’ll be pleased to hear that Wordle is released at midnight in your local time zone, which means you will get another chance to play on Wednesday.
