A controversial moment from the latest season of Netflix‘s Love is Blind is going viral on social media after contestant Sara Carton chose to end her engagement to Ben Mezzenga over his conservative political views.
The scene in question spread like wildfire on X, where viewers were divided over the breakup: Some congratulated Carton for ending the relationship, while others felt Mezzenga ultimately “dodged a bullet” by getting dumped.
Carton made the difficult decision to end the relationship at the altar before all of their loved ones.
“I love you so much, but I’ve always wanted a partner to be on the same … wavelength and so today, I can’t,” she tells him on the show. “I’m sorry but I don’t want that to be misunderstood. I still love you and everything about you is amazing and I care about you so much.”
In response, Mezzenga said he still wanted to continue their relationship even if they did not proceed with the wedding. In a later scene with her mother and sister, Carton revealed that her decision to end the relationship was because their political opinions on topics such as Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ rights did not align.
“I want someone to think about that stuff,” she said, later adding in a confessional, “Sometimes I did wonder if was surface, fun, carefree love that we had.”
The moment sparked a fierce debate online as viewers remained divided over whether she made the right decision to leave him.
“Sara is getting a lot of hate on Love Is Blind when Ben couldn’t even man up and say “I don’t align”….her values were EXTREMELY clear in the pods. He led her to think he was open, when sign after sign showed he wasn’t as open as he led her to believe,” one viewer wrote on X.
Others called Carton “unbearable” and said she “encapsulates everything that is wrong with this country.”
Some Love is Blind fans also criticized Carton for waiting until they made it to the altar to end the relationship at all, calling the move “completely unnecessary because you already knew.”
Despite the breakup, Carton later moved to Nashville to stay with Mezzenga, though she said he later ghosted her.
“I felt so duped,” Carton told Netflix’s Tudum. “It took me months — longer than I even knew him — to process everything, accept everything that happened, and move forward.”
Carton has since returned to live in Minneapolis. Love is Blind Season 8 is streaming now on Netflix.
