BYD has partnered with drone manufacturer DJI to introduce a new feature that brings science fiction to reality — a drone launch system integrated directly into a car’s roof. Designed for seamless aerial filming on the move, the Lingyuan system is now available in China for ¥16,000 CNY (roughly $2,200 USD).

The system, whose name translates to “Spirit Kite,” is housed within a 30cm-square slim box on the car’s roof. At the press of a touchscreen button, two doors slide open, revealing a drone launch pad capable of deploying while the vehicle is in motion. The system is designed for operation at speeds of up to 15 mph, allowing the drone to take off, track the vehicle and safely re-dock.

With the tech, BYD and DJI aim to transform cars into “mobile entertainment and exploration platforms” by providing a vertical field of view that captures travel moments in real-time. The drone transmits footage directly to the car’s central display, allowing drivers and passengers to record, pause and share their journey.

This next-level integration marks a significant step in automotive and aerial tech, enabling drivers to create professional-grade travel content. With autonomous re-docking and touchscreen controls, BYD and DJI aim to redefine how we capture and experience road trips. At the time of writing, the Lingyuan system is exclusively available on the Chinese market.
