As Lady Gaga strutted out and shimmied in a shimmering flapper-like ensemble, complete with a magnificent lob and feather coat, the chart-topping artist — tonight pulling double-duty as musical guest and host of Saturday Night Live — had no trouble turning the joke on herself.
In a breezy opening monologue clocking in just at typical radio fare length, the multi-Grammy Award winner quipped, “I know you might be thinking I’m here to promote my album, Mayhem, but I’m actually here to remind you I’m an amazing actor.”
Naturally, she addressed Joker: Folie à Deux, poking fun by saying, “Apparently people thought it was awesome.”

The film recently won Worst Screen Couple (along with Worst Sequel), but the pop star took it in stride: “Jokes on them, I love winning things. My Razzie brings me one step closer to an EGORT; it’s like an EGOT, but it’s hurtful.”
She also mentioned her inaugural hosting gig, in 2013 at the age of 27, quipping that now, at 38, she’s at “scientifically the best age for a pop star.” In fact, she added, “Chappell Roan is 58. Charli XCX, she’s 75. Tate McRae [who was a musical guest last week] is my biological grandmother.”
The “Just Dance” musician added, “The last time I hosted was in 2013, and every aspect of my performance aged amazingly. There’s no need to Google ‘SNL 2013, Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly.’”
Bowen Yang even made an appearance as her “superfan.” Visibly nervous and almost shaking with trepidation, he introduced her prematurely as if for a performance, to which Lady Gaga replied: “It’s a little early, but great job Bowen.”
Gaga even had time to give a brief anecdote, sharing the backstory of how she met her fiancé, businessman Michael Polansky. She explained that her mom set them up, noting that she was “literally smoking a cigarette” as her mom told her he works in cancer research. After going on three dates together, Gaga said she never smoked again “except when I’m drunk,” prompting a gloved hand to deliver a cig to puff on from off screen.
In closing, the New York City native remarked, “I respect everyone here so much, so tonight, I promise to act, to sing and to not do Joker 3.”
