Apple Music‘s latest DJ is none other than His Majesty King Charles III. But, please, no requests…

Announced today, the unlikely duo will soon debut the aptly titled The King’s Music Room – a one-off radio show recorded at Buckingham Palace “in His Majesty’s office”.

The King’s Music Room sees the 76-year-old sovereign turn selector to deliver a personally curated selection that will offer “an exclusive insight into His Majesty King Charles III’s relationship with music”. And, it seems, we’re in for an education: the King is set to drop bangers (or, as the press release puts it, “crooners”) from as far back at 1930s, as well as songs by “disco divas and reggae icons” to take us through a “musical journey that reflects His Majesty’s personal taste”. Better buckle up!

As well as being King of the United Kingdom, Charles III is also the monarch and head of state for another 14 nations that make up the Commonwealth realm, making him the King of countries including Canada, Australia and Jamaica. The collaboration marks the upcoming Commonwealth Day on March 10 and Apple Music says the The King’s Music Room will include music “from around the Commonwealth”, adding that the DJ-cum-King’s curation was “shaped by his extraordinary experiences from around the world”.

Music is – for many – a deeply personal and emotional thing. The show promises to give listeners a peek into the British monarchy, one of the world’s most private institutions, with the King sharing “anecdotes about his encounters with some of the artists featured and reveals why the songs help form the soundtrack to his life.”

Introducing his new show, King Charles III is quoted: “Throughout my life, music has meant a great deal to me. I know that is also the case for so many others. It has that remarkable ability to bring happy memories flooding back from the deepest recesses of our memory, to comfort us in times of sadness, and to take us to distant places. But perhaps, above all, it can lift our spirits to such a degree, and all the more so when it brings us together in celebration. In other words, it brings us joy.”

The King’s Music Room premieres on Apple Music 1 next Monday, March 10, at 1am ET / 6am GMT and will include music by icons Bob Marley and Grace Jones, as well as contemporary artists Davido and Raye.
