NBC has given a pilot order to an untitled single-camera comedy headlined and executive produced by Tracy Morgan. It reunites the former 30 Rock star with the Emmy-winning series’ co-showrunners Tina Fey & Robert Carlock and writer Sam Means. All four also share Saturday Night Live background.

Written by Carlock and Means, the new comedy stars Morgan as a disgraced former football player who is on a mission to rehabilitate his image.

Carlock, Means and Morgan executive produce with Fey, Eric Gurian and David Miner. Rhys Thomas is director and executive producer on the pilot. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where Fey, Carlock and Means are under overall deals, produces with Little Stranger, Bevel Gears and 3 Arts.

Morgan also stars in Paramount+’s upcoming comedy series Crutch, an offshoot from CBS’ The Neighborhood. If the NBC pilot goes to series and Crutch gets renewed, he will be able to do both shows.

The Tracy Morgan project, which has been heating up for awhile and is currently casting, marks the first pilot order for NBC this season.

Fey created and headlined the 2006 NBC series 30 Rock, which ran for seven seasons with her and Carlock as executive producers and co-showrunners, sharing in three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series. For his role as Tracy Jordan, Morgan received an Emmy acting nominations.

Carlock also co-created and executive produced with Fey Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which originated on NBC before moving to Netflix, and NBC’s Mr. Mayor. The two executive produced Girls5eva, which ran on Peacock for two seasons and on Netflix for another one. Carlock and Means co-created and executive produced the Netflix post-apocalyptic animated series Mulligan.
