Sara Haines found herself battling Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin as they discussed President Donald Trump‘s impending speech to Congress on this morning’s episode of The View. While the two women thought Democrats should either “walk out” or skip the event altogether, Haines argued that they should “sit there” and “listen” to what the POTUS has to say.
Behar kicked off the conversation about Trump’s speech — which will air tonight on CBS — telling her co-hosts, “I think [Democrats] should walk out. I think a picture is worth a thousand words.”
“Just sitting there and being docile is not working. He’s over the edge,” she continued. “I think that we’ve passed the point of no return with him and I think we need to stand up to them big time. And they’re in the position of doing that and they should do it. We certainly can’t expect the Republicans to do anything.”
Hostin, however, didn’t think Democrats “should show up at all.”
“I think the record will show that the room was half empty and that the Democrats fought him, that the Democratic Party is actually an opposition party at this point, not a resistance party,” she said, before adding, “I think it would be much better to simply deny him the audience that he craves so very much. And at the same time showing that they are the opposition party.”
That’s when Haines chimed in to disagree with both of her co-hosts.
“I think their job is to show up and listen and I think there’s a strength in optics in that, too. We’re not going anywhere. We came here, we’re sitting here, we’re doing our job,” she said, before questioning what walking out would do other than give Republicans more ammo against the Democrats.
“I understand what you’re saying, Joy, about [walking] out. I know people feel helpless. But what did the walking out do?” she said. “It made a mockery in some ways of people saying, ‘See, they can’t even sit there and listen,’ or, ‘They didn’t even show up and their job is to show up.’ You show up, you show up stern-faced, unbreakable, organized, and let those optics speak for themselves.”
Behar then suggested that Democrats would be “giving [Trump] legitimacy by showing up,” to which Haines sharply fired back, “They are not. The voters gave him legitimacy by putting him in office.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
