Abu Dhabi’s Al Qana district has welcomed a new addition to its waterfront with the unveiling of Otaku Café, designed by Shell + Core. Departing from the minimalist aesthetics of its UAE counterparts, this location embraces an experimental approach, drawing inspiration from renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando and the wabi-sabi philosophy.

Shell + Core has reimagined the cafe’s interiors with a bold interplay of raw materiality and organic textures. Concrete volumes contrast with warm elements, forming a sculptural composition that balances brutalist starkness with natural imperfection. A central column, partially wrapped in rich wood and set with dramatic lighting, becomes a focal point, casting shadows across the aggregate concrete floor.

The space embraces the Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy, celebrating the beauty of imperfection through exposed natural materials. Californian burl wood serves as a standout feature, infusing the cafe with warmth, while vintage furniture selections add a timeless touch. Large plants strategically punctuate the interiors, subtly defining intimate seating areas while preserving the venue’s openness.

Reflecting its waterfront setting, the design incorporates fluid, flowing forms that mimic the movement of water. Reflective surfaces and carefully curated lighting create an evolving interplay between light and shadow, ensuring the space feels dynamic throughout the day.
