What Is A Class-Action Lawsuit?
A class-action lawsuit is a type of lawsuit where a plaintiff sues a defendant or multiple defendants on behalf of a group.
Taxes: Is A Class-Action Lawsuit Considered Income?
Class action settlements are considered taxable income under the Internal Revenue Code, with some exceptions listed in the code. The two most common exceptions are amounts paid for certain discrimination claims and amounts paid for physical injury, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
What People Are Saying
Zachary Clopton, a professor at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, told NBC Washington: “In a situation where a big corporation harms a large number of individuals by a small amount, say you’re overcharged $20 on a bank fee, it wouldn’t make sense for each person to sue on their own. Just the cost of filing the lawsuit is worth more than $20.
“But if I could sue on behalf of 100,000 or a million or 10 million customers, well, then it’s possible that that lawsuit could go forward, we might eventually recover.”
What Happens Next
Consumers eligible for the eight settlements have until the specified deadlines to file a claim.
