A TV adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians is currently in development at Max. Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 film, is set to serve as the showrunner and executive producer, while director Jon M. Chu will also return as an executive producer.

Just like the movie, the series is based on Kevin Kwan’s book series of the same name. Crazy Rich Asians was first published in 2013, followed by China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and Rich People Problems in 2017. Kwan, who was an executive producer on the 2018 film, will also take on the role for the Max series, which is being produced by Warner Bros TV.

It is currently unclear whether any of the film’s cast members will return for the TV series.

In addition to Crazy Rich Asians, Lim is known for directing the 2023 comedy Joy Ride, which marked her feature directorial debut. She also penned the screenplay for Disney‘s 2021 film Raya and the Last Dragon. Currently, she is directing and producing The Princess Diaries 3 with Anne Hathaway. Lim’s past TV work includes shows like One Tree Hill and Private Practice. She is represented by Paradigm and Ginsburg, Daniels, Kallis.

Chu, the director behind the 2024 film adaptation of Wicked and its upcoming sequel Wicked: For Good, has previously helmed films like In the Heights, two Step Up installments, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. He is represented by Artists First, UTA, Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, and ID PR.

Kwan’s other novels include Sex and Vanity (2020) and Lies and Weddings (2024). He is represented by CAA and attorney Peter Nichols at Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Feldman, Rogal, Shikora & Clark, Inc.

The Crazy Rich Asians series will be executive produced by Lim through her production company, 100 Tigers, alongside Naia Cucukov. Chu will also executive produce via his company, Electric Somewhere, with Kwan, Nina Jacobson, and Brad Simpson serving as executive producers through their Color Force banner, which developed and produced the original film.

SK Global Entertainment will produce the series, with Chloe Dan overseeing the project for the company.
