So you binged all of Netflix‘s new comedy series, Running Point, in a matter of hours? Honestly, we can’t blame you, it’s a pretty bingeable show thanks to Kate Hudson‘s stellar performance and Mindy Kaling‘s comedy styling. Alas, now you are sitting around and wondering when we can expect Season 2 to come out, arent you? Well, there’s good news and bad news.
**Spoilers ahead for Running Point Season 1**
As of release day, Running Point has not been renewed by Netflix for a second season. It’s criminal, truly! With a cast and creative team like this, we should have a guaranteed five-season run, at the minimum. But before you start panicking, just know that it does typically take the streaming service a hot second to renew shows. That’s the bad news. Admittedly, not that terrible!
Good news: while Netflix has not given it the green light for Season 2, there is a lot of hope for future seasons, especially from the actors involved in the project. In fact, Jay Ellis, Drew Tarver, and Scott MacArthur recently spoke with Decider and explained just how much the entire team behind Running Point is looking forward to renewal news for their basketball comedy.
“We all hope there’s a Season 2, for sure,” said Ellis, who plays the head coach of the fictional Los Angeles Waves, Jay Brown. “We’d be excited to work together again.”
“I think this world is built to run. It’s big, it’s expansive. For that reason, I think there’s a lot of storylines and emotional arcs that we get to follow in Season 1,” added MacArthur, who plays Ness Gordon, Isla’s (Hudson) older brother and the Waves’ general manager.
He continued, “And I think if there were more stories to tell, we’ll just keep exploring these relationships because each time the characters are in different combinations, there are new colors in new light. I think that would be just a lot of fun because there’s a lot there.”
There certainly is a lot to explore in a Season 2 and beyond, including a potential relationship between Isla and Jay. At the end of Season 1, amid her potentially crumbling relationship with Lev (Max Greenfield), Isla shares a tender kiss with the coach that complicates things. Remember: Jay is supposed to be leaving for Boston to be close to his ex-wife and kids.
It doesn’t end there, either. After pulling the Waves out of a rut in the weeks following her appointment to the role of team president, Isla and the team come narrowly close to closing the deal on a championship spot, only to fall short with a buzzer-beater shot. As if that crushing disappointment wasn’t enough, our protagonist then shows up to work the next day to find that her older brother, Cam (Justin Theroux), is ready to take back his job.
Will our girl walk away quietly (unlikely) or go down fighting? We hope it’s the latter, but no matter how it ends up, the stars are ready to dive deeper into their characters and the dynamics, and hopefully watch Isla keep a firm grip on what is rightfully hers.
“It reflects the world, the real world of a sports franchise and an NBA franchise. It’s ever-changing, right? It’s constantly ever-changing,” said Ellis of the series finale. “I think it could go as long as Netflix is willing to write the check.”
All 10 episodes of Running Point Season 1 are currently streaming on Netflix.
