Focus Features, on a weekend when they just might see their first Oscar Best Picture win with Conclave, has the wide release thriller Last Breath, which has clocked $1M in advance previews at 2,475 theaters.
The Woody Harrelson-Simu Liu deep sea diver thriller is expected to do in the high single digits in a frame when Disney/Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World is expected to do around $14M in a threepeat of No. 1. The Anthony Mackie movie ended its second week with $35.6M for a running estimated cume of $148.6M. Brave New World did $1.5M yesterday, -4% from Wednesday. Cap keeps all the Imax auditoriums this weekend.
Rivals have noticed that Focus is spending on linear for Last Breath, and commending that given its solid reviews at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. As far as premium formats go, Focus has access to D-Box screens. $650K of the $1M previews are from showtimes last night. The Alex Parkinson directed thriller is booked at 3,011 theaters.

NEON’s Oz Perkins feature take of Stephen King short story, The Monkey, ends week one with $18.2M after an estimated $838K Thursday, -8% from Wednesday. The pic looks to decline around 60% or more, so $5.6M. Perkins’ previous NEON horror film, Longlegs, eased -47% in weekend 2 last July off a C+ Cinemascore, which is the same grade that The Monkey obtained.
StudioCanal/Sony’s Paddington in Peru ends week 2 with $8.1M, and a running total of $26.8M. Thursday was $327K, -1% from Wednesday. The threequel is pacing $400K ahead of Paddington 2 at the same point in time.
Fourth is DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Dog Man with $7M in week 4 after a $259K Thursday, +8%. Running total is $79.8M.
Chinese animated sequel Ne Zha 2 posted an estimated second week of $4.4M for a $16.2M cume. Thursday was $227K, -13%.
